Host Destination

Townsville and its twin city, Thuringowa, make up Australia’s largest tropical city and provide a premier destination for visitors wanting a genuine taste of life in the tropics.

Townsville offers perfect weather to enjoy a diversity of experiences that range from the excitement of skydiving and ‘barra’ fishing, to the magic of Magnetic Island, the historical charm of Charters Towers and the breathtaking rainforest of the Paluma Ranges.

Enjoy the beachfront promenade, The Strand, in the heart of Townsville city. A 2.5km stretch of beach lined with restaurants, cafes, bars, barbeque/picnic areas, swimming enclosures/pools, sporting and recreational facilities, walking paths – all with sweeping views across Cleveland Bay and Magnetic Island.

The beautiful world-heritage listed Magnetic Island is only 8km from Townsville and is home to the largest colony of koalas living in their natural habitat. The island is a bushwalker’s paradise with walking tracks across the island and more than 23 beaches and bays waiting to be discovered.

The History of Competitive Disabled Water Skiing

In 1987 the inaugural Disabled Water Ski World Cup was held outside London, United Kingdom. The Championships were a great success and opened many doors for people with disabilities around the World. This was followed by the Second World Cup in Western Australia in 1989.

Australia's first National Disabled Water Ski Titles were held in April 1992 in Sydney, giving the disabled water ski athletes of Australia a chance to ski competitively under World Water Ski Rules.

In Mach 1993, the second National Disabled Water Ski Titles were held in Melbourne, on the Yarra River, as part of the Moomba Festival. This gave the disabled competitors the high profile they deserve. The Australian team of ten was selected to compete in the First World Disabled Water Ski Championships which were held in Frejus, France in July 1993.
